Last month, Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe and his wife, First Lady Akie Abe, came to DC for a state visit with the Obamas.

While the President and Prime Minister were meeting, the First Lady spent time with the Prime Minister’s wife, First Lady Akie Abe, at Great Falls Elementary School in Great Falls, Virginia. There, the two First Ladies spoke with a group of students who are learning Japanese and studying Japanese culture. Great Falls Elementary has a Japanese immersion program in which many students learn several of their subjects in Japanese.

My wish for all of you and for young people across America is that you have the chance to engage with kids from other parts of the world, that you learn about each other’s lives, that you understand one another’s hopes and dreams so that you can truly see for yourselves firsthand just how much we all have in common around the world.

First Lady Akie Abe also got to meet the First Dogs, Bo and Sunny, in a surprise visit!

First Lady Michelle Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry awarded the the International Women of Courage Award to nine women who are standing up for what is right:

When these women witnessed horrific crimes or the disregard for basic human rights they spoke up, risking everything they had to see that justice was done.  When they saw their communities or their countries were ignoring issues like sexual violence or women’s rights, they gave those issues a face and a voice.  And with every act of strength and defiance, with every blog post, with every community meeting, these women have inspired millions to stand with them, and find their own voices, and work together to achieve real and lasting change.

We've got the full video below. First Lady Michelle's part starts at 4:15:

Behind the Scenes of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Fireside Chat:

As part of her Let's Move! third anniversary tour, First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a fireside chat with Kelly Ripa about the importance of kids' health. You can watch the event or just check out some of the pictures. A couple of notable points that the First Lady made were:

  • Eating dinner together as a family helps keep kids healthy.
  • "We should be talking in terms of health, not how people look."
  • We have to think long-term. Change won't happen overnight. "If they start these healthy habits now, we're looking at what kind of kids they're going to be when they're headed to college."

First Lady Michelle Obama spoke with the Governors of America about the importance of helping military veterans to transition back to the workforce.

If we do this, we won't just be upholding our values and honoring our troops... we'll be lowering the unemployment rate.
We'll be improving our health care system.
We'll be boosting economic growth in this country.
And we'll be strengthening our country not just for now, but for the years ahead.
And in the end, that's really what Joining Forces is all about.
It's not just about supporting our heroes while they're on the battlefield.
It's about standing with them ...and their families when they come home. It's a forever commitment.
