Tradition holds that the President hosts the national champions of major American sports at the White House. The St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series last year, and so this was their turn in the spotlight with Barack and Michelle.
You may remember that First Lady Michelle had actually attended one of the Cardinals' World Series games in honor of our Veterans.
